Jean-Louis Lalonde

Après avoir enseigné longtemps le français et l’histoire dans des écoles secondaires, Jean-Louis Lalonde se consacre depuis vingt ans à des recherches sur l’histoire des protestants de langue française au Québec et aux États-Unis. Il a d’abord publié une synthèse des études déjà parues sur le sujet dans Des loups dans la bergerie (Fides, 2002). Il est secrétaire de la Société d’histoire du protestantisme franco-québécois (voir son site en ligne) qui existe depuis 2003 et se consacre à faire connaître ce domaine.

En novembre 2014, il a parcouru le cimetière Mont-Royal pour y photographier toutes les tombes portant un nom français, dans l’espoir d’y repérer des franco-protestants. A part celles des célèbres Chiniquy, Morin, Tanner, Villard, Duclos entre autres, ou celles d’éminents anglophones qui ont soutenu le franco-protestantisme comme les MacVicar, Court, Ferrier, etc., force est de constater que les noms français du cimetière appartiennent le plus souvent à des catholiques qui s’y sont fait enterrer pour diverses raisons.

Pour que cette information puisse enfin servir à un large public et aux généalogistes, Jean-Louis Lalonde a décidé de la confier à Find a grave en espérant qu’elle leur sera utile. Signalons que l’arbre franco-protestants dans Ancestry.ca construit par Richard Lougheed contient déjà plus de 19 000 inscriptions.

After working for many years teaching French and history in High Schools, Jean-Louis Lalonde has spent the last twenty years researching the history of French Protestants in Quebec and in the US. He published several books including an overview of the subject in Des loups dans la bergerie (Fides, 2002). He is secretary of the Société d’histoire du protestantisme franco-québécois which has existed since 2003 and is dedicated to making this group better known.

In November 2014, he searched the entire Mount Royal cemetery in Montreal to photograph the tombstones with French surnames, in the hope of finding more French Protestants. Besides better known names like Charles Chiniquy, Morin, Tanner, Villard and Duclos and eminent English residents who supported French Protestants like MacVicar, Court and Ferrier, he discovered that most French names in this Protestant cemetery seem to be Catholics buried here for various reasons.

So that this information can help a greater public and genealogists, Jean-Louis Lalonde decided to give these photos and info to Find a grave hoping it will help others. Please note that the franco-protestants tree in Ancestry.ca, put together by Richard Lougheed, contains over 19 000 people.
