In 2006, a handful of locals, all-volunteers, formed the 501(c)3 Portsmouth Cedar Grove Cemetery Foundation to further protect, preserve, and restore Cedar Grove Cemetery and to educate the public about the significance of those interred there.

We perform hands on projects at the cemetery and raise funds for restoration efforts. With burial plots no longer available and in cooperation with the City of Portsmouth, the Foundation created Portsmouth’s only Scatter Garden where, for a minimal cost, cremated remains can be scattered.

Other improvements include grounds beautification, brick repair, installing benches, trash catchers and signs, planting trees, restoring headstones, and staging and hosting events. Each year culminates with the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony.

To follow our progress, we encourage you to visit the cemetery at 301 Fort Lane and to LIKE our Facebook page, Cedar Grove Cemetery Foundation, Portsmouth.

That's our formal introduction. In a less formal fashion, my name is Barbara and have been with the foundation from day 1. I have been a history fanatic my whole life and have learned that those buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery have some of the most fascinating stories I've ever heard. From the Revolutionary War, through Vietnam, the 1855 Yellow Fever Epidemic, and just the stories of heartbreak and hope, you can follow the lives of some of the most interesting people in history. It's impossible to not learn something new during each visit, even if it's just experiencing a sense of peace when viewing the funerary art.
