Whether ancient Indian mounds or a modern cemetery, they all have one purpose in common: To honor and remember those taken from us and to be a place where loved ones can come to mourn and reflect. Being appreciative of art, history, and culture, perusing though cemeteries has always been a peaceful and educational hobby of mine, a lesson on where we've come from, what we've done, and a reminder of what is to come. As an artist, I try and capture the somber beauty of these places. Like books in a library, each grave marker tells a story of a particular moment in time. The dates, the ornate carvings, the rocks, the homemade cement slabs, and the unmarked depressions all tell stories of wars, prosperity, epidemics, accomplishments, and unimaginable hardships. Whether it be an elaborate headstone, a lichen covered rock, or lack of either, the people who lie beneath are to be remembered for the part that they played in the grand story. No matter the memorial, even an electronic one, it's mere placement is an indication that someone was here and contributed to the world around us. I hope to contribute to the documentation of that memorialization though my photography.
