I am working on completing my father's multi-decade project: a regimental history of the Iowa 3rd Volunteer Infantry in the American Civil War, in the soldiers' own words. We lost a great.. uncle, Samuel Jeffers, in that war fighting with the Iowa 3rd.
My dad has several times said to me, his eyes welling with tears, "I don't want their stories forgotten."
I began my part simply proof reading and offering a few suggestions, but found myself drawn into the world of these soldier boys. Some of the soldiers were still alive when dad was born in 1926. At least one, Benjamin Bowlby, was alive in 1940.
As my dad's memory has started to falter, I have now taken the task as my own.
