James Roland Pruin was born on July 3, 1961 to Claus Henry Pruin and Flora Martha (Garberich) at Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Minnesota.
James lived in several places, primarily around Kandiyohi County, Minnesota with his parents until Claus and Flora purchased their first and last home at 471 2nd St W, Lake Lillian, MN around 1973.
James attended Kindergarten through 4th grade at Lake Lillian Elementary School, Lake Lillian, MN, 5th through 7th at Cosmos Elementary and High School, Cosmos, MN, finally transferring back to Bird Island-Lake Lillian High School, Bird Island, MN in 8th grade until his graduation in June 1979.
James joined the Air Force on their delayed entry program in November 1978 and left for basic trading in San Antonio, Texas on 6 July 1979. After completion of basic training James was sent to Chanute AFB, Illinois where he attended technical training as a jet engine mechanic.
