Both of my grandmothers lived until I was well into my 30's, so I was lucky because each had a deep love of genealogy and a treasure trove of pictures, family Bibles, vital records, etc. to pass on when they died. Their interest in preserving family history was fostered by their parents and grandparents in the same way it was instilled in me.
