Bio

My goals with FAG are modest. I never expect to or want to manage thousands of entries. My goal is to focus primarily on graves in Buncombe, Madison, and Polk Counties of NC. For me, FAG is a project that involves connecting and documenting as much information as possible to make each memorial "personal" and one that connects the threads of a much larger family and community history.

I try to be thorough about documenting the burials of those with unmarked graves (i.e.- no headstones) by indicating in the bio section that no marker is present and note any source of my information that the person is buried there. I sincerely ask and hope? that others do the same. This reduces confusion and potential wasted trips to any cemetery to search for specific grave markers.

I salute those who have worked so hard to document thousands of graves in far flung cemeteries; providing starting points for making family connections.

I encourage everyone and especially those with thousands of entries to continue their own research by linking parents to children and adding memorial photos. This work is time consuming and not "easily countable" as is "total number" of memorials; but significantly enhances the overall value of the memorial.

I was born in Asheville and grew up in the "North Buncombe" area that borders Madison County NC. My family has been in the North Buncombe / Madison County area since abt 1790.

My paternal side of the family (i.e.
Black / Garrison / Guthrie / Watts)
had a very strong oral history tradition.

Further down the paternal side of my family last names include:
-Arrington
-Biffle and Bridges
-Cosby, Cravens
-Dickerson
-Edmonds, Edwards
-Eller and Fox
-Garland, Goettge (now Ketchey)
-Hamm, Harrison
-Henkel and Hunter
-Massey and Penland
-Revis and Roberts,
-Terry and Wilson
-Eschmann (now Ashman) and Dentzer

The maternal side of my family includes the last names of
-Brown
-Moss
-Smith
-Cudd.
-Cable
-Dill
-Harrison
-Page
-Pike
-Steadman (Steedman).

Parts of my maternal side have been more difficult to track to before 1850 due to several illegitimate births and other social economic factors.
