I'm retired and am enjoying doing ancestry research. In addition to my own family, I am also researching the civil rights history of Lexington, Holmes County, Mississippi where I was born and raised. That research led me to Hartman Turnbow, an African American farmer from Mileston, Holmes County, Mississippi, near Tchula. A group of farmers led by Turnbow were the first African Americans to try to register to vote in Holmes County. They are referred to as the "Mileston 14." It truly is an inspirational story.

Lexington was also home to famed newspaper publisher and Nobel prize winner Hazel Brannon Smith.
