YES, the minute you create something, including a photograph, you own the copyright. Possession of an item (like a painting or old photograph), however, does not necessarily mean that you own the copyright.
Obituaries published in newspapers are probably copyrighted by the newspaper. Check. For instance, if it says this: "Copyright 2022, Delaware County Daily Times (Primos - Upper Darby, PA) - a Journal Register Company Property, All Rights Reserved," you need to ASK PERMISSION to use it.
DO your homework. And do not listen to that woman who says photos displayed in public are copyright free (public domain). This is not true.
