To those who give their time to enter and photograph memorials, thank you! However I would like to discourage people from doing things that might harm the stones. Before you touch a stone, please educate yourself with a reputable conservation source. Water is really the only safe choice, and never use a stiff brush. Seemingly harmless chemicals such as soap, shaving cream, or chalk can still damage the stone. See #30078633. Even mild organic solvents can provide a food source for microbes which will then secrete acids (just like how you get cavities).

There are better ways of getting a good picture. Obliquely reflected sunlight onto a stone in shadow is completely safe and free and gives a great result. See #58783244
