I grew up with my British father and Norwegian mother in a small hamlet near Åndalsnes, Norway. From my boy's room I could see the sandstone memorials for two British sailors Known-unto-God. Who were they, I wondered, and why have they not been identified? There are only 11 casualties buried in the municipality of Rauma. It should be possible to identify all of them. I believe we will.
In World War II, from 17 April to 2 May 1940, Åndalsnes was the base area for Sickleforce, the southern part of the North West Expeditionary Force. For almost 20 years I have been sifting through archives in Britain and Norway to identify these and other war graves in Romsdal. In 2017, Pilot Officer Hector Garman Webb, RAF, had his proper headstone after 77 years in an unidentified grave. But, there are still 6 unidentified graves we would like to see a name on.
