Bio

I am a gg-granddaughter of Mary Amanda Anderson, sister of James Wilson Anderson - of the South Carolina Anderson family from the Greenwood area. They migrated with other families to Calhoun County, AL (formerly Benton County)following the opening of that area to settlers in 1834.

Ancestor William M. Stephens was in 51st AL Cavalry, Co. D. William married Martha Cobb of Choccolocco Valley, AL.

His mother, Mary Amanda Anderson, is buried in the Hill Family Cemetery in Clayton Co., GA near Hampton. She married Enoch Stephens who died in 1843 at which time she then married Andrew Murphy of Fayette Co., GA. Enoch and Mary Amanda had three children, one of whom was William M. Stephens, my gg-grandfather. William and Martha relocated to TX in 1866 following the Civil War.
The photos here were taken by me on a genealogy trip my husband and I made to Fayetteville/Calhoun Counties Ga in 1998...in the wooded area where the Hill Family Cemetery was located. We were fortunate to find the cemetery before the land was purchased by the water treatment plant. I could picture where a house had stood before destroyed by a hurricane five years before. A Crabapple tree was growing in what would have been the yard..some of the large foundation stones were still there. A short way down the road we found the graves were overgrown but we managed to do rubbings and take the photos I've shared here. They represent how I would like to remember their final resting place.
