I started doing my family Genealogy research in 1985, after trying various other hobbies after suffering a stroke in 1980. Previous to the stroke I was a teacher, specializing in EMH and TMH kids. The stroke left me unable to work. That is why I had the time to search for a hobby that could hold my interest for longer than a few months.
I went to a Genealogy meeting in Elgin IL just once.... and I was hooked! "Back in the day" we would go to the Archives in Chicago to do research, make copies, and order micro-films from Salt Lake Temple of the Latter-day Saints in Utah. I would go to the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne IN, and the University of Madison WI Library to do research.
I would take cemetery road trips with genealogy friends to take photos of Headstones. Sometimes we would do "gravestone rubbings" with big sheets of paper and pencil.

Now doing research is so much easier with the internet. I am really enjoying the Find A Grave web site.
