Once a client, pantry coordinator serves her neighbors in need

Valerie Brown will never forget when she relied on food pantries to provide for her family when health problems prohibited her from working. Now her experiences help her serve those in need with compassion.

Shortly after joining Redeeming Grace Church in 1995, Valerie was asked to head up the congregation's new food pantry. Valerie was hesitant to take on such a large responsibility and worried the workload would overwhelm her. That was not the case for long—Redeeming Grace parishioners soon answered Valerie's request for help.
Now I have a volunteer waitlist I have so many volunteers," Valerie said.

Every Saturday, Redeeming Grace, located in the West Pullman neighborhood, distributes food to more than 100 families. After receiving a number, clients are invited inside like guests to sit comfortably rather than waiting outside in the elements.

"I offer everyone a bottle of water. I'm like their waitress," Valerie said. "I want everyone to feel like they're worth it—like it's worth it to come to the food pantry."

Imitating a market, Valerie instituted a choice system at the pantry to give clients a sense of autonomy. This system also is convenient for individuals with dietary restrictions and other health concerns who must closely monitor their sugar and sodium intake.

"We realized we were actually giving clients stuff they really didn't want," Valerie said. "So [now] the food is on the table and you just shop like when you walk into a Jewel."

Whether it is offering a cake for birthdays or staying open until everyone in line is served, Valerie and her team go above and beyond to treat clients as they themselves would like to treated. Rev. Colin Smith, pastor of Redeeming Grace, credits the trusting atmosphere Valerie has cultivated with the pantry's success in reaching so many of their neighbors in need 1996-2010
