Russell "Russ" Hayes, born and raised in Maries County, retires on January 11, 2002 after working on the railroad for 32 years and 10 months. Russell's father, the late Charles Hayes, was a teacher and bus driver for Maries R-1 School District for many years. His mother,Catherine (Clement) Hayes, was postmaster of the Hayden, MO post office from July 1, 1949 until her retirement and the closing of the Hayden Post Office on June 30, 1972.

Russ graduated from Vienna High School in 1958 and married Georgena Stratman, a 1961 VHS graduate, on July 7, 1962. They have two children,
son Greg and daughter Tracey. They have 6 grandchildren-Lesley, Sarah, Russell, Cheznee, Marli and Riley.
