Bio

My Steele family came to the Seattle area in 1865, having travelled from Centerville, Iowa, via the Oregon and California Trails. James William Steele and his wife, Jane Campbell Wilson, were accompanied by most of their 11 children, except for 2, who had died young. Samuel and Eliza, the 2 young ones, are buried in Madison, Jefferson, Indiana. The oldest surviving child, Hugh Nathaniel Steele, had come to the Pacific NW much earlier than the rest of the family. He and his wife (later divorced) had a son, also named James William Steele, in honor of the elder Steele. Young "Willie" lived to only 3 years of age. James' and Janes' children all were married, or did so after their arrival in the NW, and went on to establish their homes and lives in the Seattle area. Descendants of nearly every one of these families still live in and around Seattle.
