He served as Denver, Colorado auditor from 1921 to 1931 and then was elected to serve as Mayor from 1931 to 1935, against the incumbent Mayor Stapleton. During his last year in office, he stole a police car that was left running unattended, to bring attention to economic issues to city administration. Belford, James Burns b. September 28, 1837 d. January 10, 1910 US Congressman. In 1876, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress and served until 1877, when he was succeeded by Thomas M. Patterson, who contested his election. In 1879, he was elected to the Forty-sixth, Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1885. Unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in the practice of law in Denver, Colorado until his death. His cousin was US Congressman Joseph McCrum Belford. Bell, Shannon Wilson d. 1874 Murder Victim. He was an alleged murder victim of cannibal Alfred Packer. Bell and 4 other people were killed and eaten by Packer between February and April 1874 and buried here. Packer was later convicted and sentenced to death, but his sentence was later changed to 40 years in prison. Packer was released on parole in January 1901. He died in 1907. Berthoud, Capt. Edward Louis b. 1825 d. June 13, 1908 Old-West Explorer. With famed mountain man Jim Bridger as his guide, discovered "Berthoud Pass" in 1861. Capt. Berthoud was the Chief Engineer for the Colorado Central Railroad. He was also the Chief Engineer for the famous Georgetown Loop Railroad. The town of Berthoud, Colorado was named for him. Bjorkman, Ernest H b. December 18, 1881 d. September 16, 1912 US Navy Peacetime Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Ordinary Seaman in the US Navy. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on the rocks of Block Island, Rhode Island. His citation reads "On board the USS Leyden, 21 January 1903, Bjorkman displayed heroism at the time of the wreck of that vessel." Blanchard, William H. 'Butch' b. February 6, 1916 d. May 31, 1966 Air Force Officer. He served as Air Force Vice Chief of Staff and was second in command. During World War II he was a heavy-bomber pilot who planned air raids on Japan and while serving with Curtis LeMay planned the atomic attack on Hiroshima.
