He was secretary of state of Wyoming in 1935-43. A delegate to Democratic National Convention from Wyoming in 1940, 1944, 1948. He was Governor of Wyoming in 1943-49. Johnston, John Jeremiah b. 1824 d. January 21, 1900 American Folk Figure. He became legendary as a frontier "Mountain Man". Born in New Jersey. he reportedly joined the United States Navy in 1846 during the Mexican American War but deserted after striking an officer, changing his name to John Johnston and heading west. In Wyoming he made his living as a hunter, trapper and woodhawk. LeFors, Joe (Joseph S.) b. 1865 d. October 1, 1940 Western Lawman. Born Joseph S. LeFors in Paris, Texas, he began his career in law enforcement in 1887, as a Wyoming Livestock Inspector recovering rustled cattle. In 1899, he was appointed a Deputy US Marshal and led a posse to capture Butch Cassidy's gang for train robberies in the territory. Mercer, Asa Shinn b. June 6, 1839 d. August 10, 1917 Asa Mercer joined his older brother in Seattle in 1859 shortly after graduating from college in Ohio. From 1861-1863 he was the first president of the University of Washington. After he left the university he decided to personally remedy the lack of single women in Seattle by going to get some. Miller, Leslie A. b. January 29, 1886 d. September 29, 1970 Governor of Wyoming from 1933 to 1939. As a depression governor, his most difficult problem was financing the state government. During his tenure, Wyoming initiated a sales tax. He took a controversial stand favoring the expansion of Grand Teton National Park. Morris, Esther Hobart b. August 18, 1814 d. April 2, 1902 Suffragist. She was appointed Justice of the Peace for South Pass City, Wyoming, in 1870, making her the first woman ever to hold such a position. She worked for the attainment of suffrage for women in Wyoming. Nickell, Willie b. May 4, 1887 d. July 18, 1901 Western Frontier Figure. Young western rancher who was murdered during the Iron Mountain Range War. At the time he was wearing his father's coat and hat and was riding his father's favorite horse. The ranch of Kels Nickell, was the only sheepherder in the area and it was believed that the killer mistook Willie for his father.
