Estonia Ferry Disaster Memorial [memorial] d. September 28, 1994
Erected in Stockholm, Sweden, the monument is dedicated to the memory of to the victims of the Estonia ferry disaster. On September 28, 1994, in stormy weather while en route from Tallinn to Stockholm, 852 people drowned when the ferry "Estonia" sunk in the Baltic Sea. Rescuers were able to save 137 and of the 852 reported lost many of their bodies were never recovered. With in the memorial's three wedge stone walls is the engraved names of those whom died. Naval Archaeologist. He was a Swedish marine technician most noted for having discovered the wreck of the 1628 Swedish galleon Vasa, at Stockholm Harbor in 1956. From 1959 to 1961, he conducted her salvage which resulted in the most complete ship of the era and is on display at the Stockholm Maritime Museum. Medical Scientist. Born at Landskrona, Sweden, he was a physician, ophthalmologist and a professor at the ophthalmological clinic in Stockholm. For his study of astigmatism of the cornea which led to the design of more effective corrective lenses for the condition, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine in 1911.
