Gamzatov, Rasul b. September 8, 1923 d. November 3, 2003 Poet. Renowned Russian poet who wrote with affection and drama about the landscapes and soaring mountains of Dagestan, the Caucasus republic where he was from. He wrote his poems in Avar, which is a language spoken by about 500,000 people in Dagestan. The poems were translated into Russian and pleased readers with their simple meter and rhyme schemes.
