  Portugese Royalty. Born Mafalda de Portugal the daughter of Sancho I de Bourgogne of Portugal and Dulcia of Provence. In 1215, she married Enrique I King of Castilla, but there is doubt that the marriage was ever consumated. It was, in any case, annulled the following year due to consanguinity. She returned to Portugal and retired to the convent at Arouca in 1222. She founded a hospice for pilgrims, and a hospital at Arouca as well as building a bridge over the river Talmeda.
