He worked for a British fur trading company before becoming an independent trader with the Hidatsa Indians on the upper Missouri River. Davis, Charles P. b. June 5, 1872 d. May 28, 1943 Philippines Insurrection Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Entered the service at Valley City, North Dakota and served as a Private in Company G, 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry. Near San Isidro, Philippine Islands, May 16, 1899, he with 21 other scouts charged across a burning bridge, under heavy fire, and completely routed 600 of the enemy who were entrenched in a strongly fortified position. Devine, Joseph McMurray b. March 15, 1861 d. August 31, 1938 North Dakota Governor. He served as Governor of North Dakota for less then a year after the death of Governor Frank Briggs in August 1898. After leaving office in 1899 he would go on to become Lieutenant Governor under Frederick Fancher. Grass, John 'Charging Bear' b. 1837 d. May 10, 1918 Lakota Chief. Born to the Blackfeet Teton band of the Lakota Sioux, son of Pezi, a hereditary Lokota chief.
