Shepley, George Foster b. 1819 d. July 20, 1878 Civil War Union Brigadier General. Entered the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 12th Maine Volunteer Infantry on November 16, 1861. Assumed command of his brigade in March 1862, which was involved in the campaign to capture of New Orleans. Soon after the city fell to Union forces, he was appointed Louisiana's military governor by his political friend and commander, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler.
