Murphy, Thomas C. b. 1842 d. December 31, 1920 Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Corporal in the Union Army in Company I, 31st Illinois Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 22, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. His citation reads "Voluntarily crossed the line of heavy fire of Union and Confederate forces, carrying a message to stop the firing of one Union regiment on another." Smith, Dietrich Conrad b. April 4, 1840 d. 1914 US Congressman. Known as D.C. Smith, he was born in Ost Friesland, Hanover, Germany, and immigrated to Pekin, Illinois with his parents in 1850. Smith attended Quincy College and during the Civil War joined the Union Army as a Lieutenant in Company I, Eighth Illinois Regiment.
