Eckart, Dietrich b. March 23, 1868 d. December 23, 1923 German nationalist poet and publicist. Eckart was an early member of the Nazi Party, and saw himself as a mentor to the young Adolf Hitler. Eckart provided the means for Hitler to enter Munich society, and gain power for the Nazis. Eckart coined the phrase "Deutschland Erwache!" ("Germany Awake!"), a rallying cry for the Nazis, and he instituted the use of the term "Fuehrer" ("Leader") for Hitler. Hitler dedicated the second volume of his book "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle") to Eckart. Mayer, Mauritia 'Moritz' b. 1833 d. March 1, 1897 Mauritia Mayer, nicknamed "Moritz," was famous in Bavaria as the proprietress of the Pension Moritz on the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden. This hotel became very popular with the Bavarian, Prussian, and Austrian ruling families, and with famous artists and musicians such as Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann. Schmundt, Rudolf [cenotaph] b. August 13, 1896 d. October 1, 1944 World War II German General. He served as personal Army Adjutant to Adolf Hitler. He was present during the attempt on Hitler's life on July 20, 1944, at Hitler's Wolf's Lair headquarters near Rastenburg, East Prussia (now in Poland). Schmundt was severely wounded by the bomb planted by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, and died of these wounds in the hospital at Rastenburg, where he was presumably buried. Schneider, Magda b. May 17, 1909 d. July 30, 1996 German Film Actress. Born in Augsburg in Bavaria, she was the mother of actress Romy Schneider. Magda was a popular actress in the 1930s and 1940s, and continued her career into the 1950s and 1960s, sometimes appearing with her more famous daughter Romy. She appeared in some 40 films. Todt, Fritz [cenotaph] b. September 4, 1891 d. February 8, 1942 German Nazi Minister for Armaments and Munitions. Todt joined the Nazi Party in 1923 and founded the Organization Todt, which handled construction of fortifications such as the Westwall and Atlantikwall, and the autobahn superhighways. After his death, his responsibilities passed to Albert Speer. Todt was buried with military honors in the Invaliden Cemetery in Berlin, but his grave was hidden by the Soviets after the war.
