Downing, Charles b. 1797 d. November 24, 1841 US Congressman. He moved to Florida Territory in 1826, studied law, and became an attorney in St. Augustine. He served in the Territorial Legislature and in other offices, including Register of Florida's federal Land Office. Flagler, Henry Morrison b. January 2, 1830 d. May 20, 1913 Businessman. Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida was named in his honor. When he came to St. Augustine in 1883 he found the city beautiful but lacking any real transportation or hotel facilities. In 1885 he began building the Hotel Ponce de Leon, which was an instant success with America's wealthy. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Pennsylvania Reserves and was promoted Colonel in command of the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment in July 1862.
