A prominent Democratic politician during the Civil War, he played a key role in West Virginia breaking away from the Confederacy, and its admission to statehood in 1863. Dawson, William Mercer Owens b. May 21, 1853 d. March 12, 1916 West Virginia Governor. He was raised in Cranberry (now Terra Alta), Preston County, apprenticed as a cooper, and also taught school. He later went into the newspaper business in Kingwood as Publisher and Editor of the Preston County Journal, which he owned from 1873 to 1891. Dawson also studied law and became an attorney. Snyder, Melvin Claude b. October 29, 1898 d. August 5, 1972 US Congressman, Jurist. He was educated at schools in Kingwood County and enlisted for World War I, serving as an Army Private. In 1923 he graduated from the West Virginia University Law School, attained admission to the bar and began a practice in Kingwood. In 1926 he served as Kingwood's Mayor, and he was Preston County's Prosecuting Attorney from 1929 to 1944.
