In 1948 he was elected as a Democrat representing Virginia's 4th District in the United States House of Representatives, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman Patrick H. Born in Buckingham County, Virginia, he received his early education and prelaw training from his brother Willis. Sweeney, Joel Walker b. 1810 d. 1860 Minstrel, Musician, Banjo Innovator. Antebellum minstrel show performer, reputed inventor of the five string banjo, member of the nationally famous musical Sweeney family that included Joel, Sampson "Sam" and Richard. Popularized the five string banjo. Buried in the family cemetery on the outskirts of Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Williams, Woodrow Wilson 'Woody' b. August 21, 1912 d. February 24, 1995 Major League Baseball Player. He was an infielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds. He began his career in 1938 with 20 games late that season in Brooklyn. Two years later, he was selected off waivers by Cincinnati and played there for three seasons beginning in 1943.
