He served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 7th South Carolina Infantry, which he led in the Sring 1862 Peninsular Campaign, the September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam (where he was shot through the lungs) and during the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, where his unit saw severe action in the Peach Orchard. Evans, Nathan George 'Shanks' b. February 3, 1824 d. November 23, 1868 Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Marion County, South Carolina, he graduated from West Point in 1848, was commissioned an officer in the 2nd Dragoons and fought the Indians in Texas. With the start of the Civil War, he was commissioned a Major in the Confederate Cavalry and fought at the First Bull Run. Gary, Martin Witherspoon b. March 10, 1831 d. April 9, 1881 Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. An 1854 Harvard graduate and a member of the South Carolina legislature, he took command of Hampton's Legion after the wounding of Colonel Wade Hampton at First Bull Run (Manassas). He commanded the last Confederate troops to leave Richmond, Virginia, in April 1865, and he helped escort Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet in their flight south. Voiselle, William Symmes b. January 29, 1919 d. January 31, 2005 Major League Baseball Player. Born in Greenwood, South Carolina, he was a right handed pitcher making his debut on September 1, 1942, with the New York Giants. For eight seasons, he played with the New York Giants (1942-47), Boston Braves (1947-49) and Chicago Cubs in 1950. He ended his career with a record of 74 wins, 84 loss, 74 complete games, 13 shutouts, 3 saves, 645 strikeouts and a 3.83 earned run average. He died in Greenwood, South Carolina, at age 86.
