Bellinger, Joseph b. 1773 d. January 10, 1830 US Congressman. A successful plantation owner, he served as a member of the State House of Representatives, 1802 to 1809 and in the State Senate, 1810 to 1813. In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until 1819. Not a candidate for reelection, he engaged in planting until his death. Born in Smoaks, South Carolina, he was the son of a cotton farmer; taught himself law while working in a law office and, in 1942, passed the state bar exam without a law degree. Hayne, Isaac b. September 23, 1745 d. August 4, 1781 Revoluntionary War Figure. He was a wealthy young rice planter who fought for independence during the American Revolution. He returned to his home to live in the neutrality after the British captured Charleston (South Carolina) in May of 1750. Later, while in Charleston to secure medicine for his ill wife and children who were suffering from smallpox, he was forced to declare his allegiance to the British.
