Elliott Jr., Stephen b. October 26, 1830 d. February 21, 1866 Brigadier General, Confederate States Army. Pre-war served in the South Carolina Legislature and Captained the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery. Elliott was badly wounded in the battle of the Crater. Later he was wounded again near Bentonville. General Elliot was elected to the legislature at war's end, but exhausted by wounds and exposure, survived a few months. Smalls, Robert Scott b. April 5, 1839 d. February 22, 1915 US Congressman, Civil War hero. Born a slave in South Carolina, he engineered a daring escape and delivered a Confederate transport steamer to Union forces. When delivering “The Planter” to the commanding officer of the Union fleet, he said that the ship was intended as a gift given by black Americans to the cause of freedom.
