Applegate, Edwin Forrest b. June 3, 1831 d. January 23, 1885 Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 29th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned on September 12, 1862. He held command of the unit during the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, then resigned on January 16, 1863. Bruder, Charles b. 1888 d. July 6, 1916 Shark Attack Victim. A 28-year old native of Switzerland, former soldier in the Swiss Army and, at the time of his death, Bell Captain at the Essex and Sussex Hotel in Spring Lake, he was the 2nd victim of the infamous "Jersey Maneater Shark Attacks" of 1916. He was attacked by the shark, which bit off both his feet before he was rescued by the hotel shore patrol. He died on the beach from loss of blood and shock. Donlin, Michael Joseph 'Turkey Mike' b. May 30, 1878 d. September 24, 1933 Major League Baseball Player. Known as "Turkey Mike" because of his unique strut. He played on seven teams in a 12-year career, mostly in the National League, from 1899 to 1914. Was a teammate of Christ Mathewson on the Giants. He acrued a lifetime batting average of .303. Was married to stage actress Mabel Hite, untill her death from cancer in 1912. After his baseball career was over, he went to Hollywood and acted in 46 movies over a 23 year career. Hay, Fred Stewart b. 1850 d. January 14, 1914 Indian Campaigns Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. His true name was Frederick H. Schwabe. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Army in Company I, 5th US Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on September 9, 1874 at Upper Wichita River, Texas. His citation reads "Gallantry in action." His exact location in the cemetery is unknown, as the burial records were destroyed in a flood.
