Hanks, Joseph Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, March 22, 1843, he served as a Private in Company E, 37th Ohio Infantry, Union Army. During actions at Vicksburg Mississippi, May 22, 1863, Private Hanks voluntarily went to assist a downed comrade lying between the lines. Under heavy Confederate fire, he rescued the wounded soldier, gave him water and carried him off the field.
