Blanchette, Louis d. 1793 Fur trader Louis Blanchette founded the city of St. Charles, Missouri in 1769. The riverfront trading center, originally named Les Petites Cotes (The Little Hills), along the Missouri River just west of St. Louis grew into a thriving city that was eventually selected as Missouri's first State Capital. DuSable, Jean Baptiste b. 1745 d. August 28, 1818 Pioneer. He is best known for founding the city of Chicago, Illinois. Born in Haiti, he was sent to France for his education. He escaped slavery by traveling north to St. Louis, Missouri, where he established a trading post and sold furs. Easton, Rufus b. May 4, 1774 d. July 5, 1834 US Congressman. He studied law, and became an attorney, first in Connecticut, and later in Rome, New York. In 1804 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri (then called Upper Louisiana Territory), and was appointed its first Postmaster, serving from 1805 to 1815. King, Andrew b. March 20, 1812 d. November 18, 1895 US Congressman. He was elected to represent Missouri's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving a single term from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. Ricketts, Dave b. July 12, 1935 d. July 13, 2008 Major League Baseball Player. He was a catcher for six seasons (1963, 1965, 1967 to 1970) with the St, Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates.
