Born in Chakarata, British India, he served as a Major in the 7th Hariana Lancers, Indian Army. On April 15, 1915, at Shariba, Mesopotamia, Major Wheeler led his squadron to attempt to capture a flag which was the centre point of a group of the enemy who were firing on one of their pickets.
