Weber, Carl Maria von b. November 17, 1786 d. June 5, 1826 Composer. He wrote the first important German Romantic opera, "Der Freischutz" ("The Free-Shooter", 1821). The plot, taken from an old folk tale, concerns a hunter who makes a pact with the devil for magic bullets that never miss their targets. Thoroughly German in sound and setting, it challenged the Italian style (epitomized by Rossini) that dominated European opera at the time. Wettin, Anton b. December 27, 1755 d. June 6, 1836 King of Saxony from 1827 to 1836. Son of Elector Friedrich Christian. He was 72 years old when he became King after his brothers King Friedrich August I. death. He was more interested in composing than reigning his country. When he died he left 50 volumes with his own compositions. His 'Salve Regina' was played during funerals of the Wettin family. Wettin, Friedrich Christian b. September 5, 1722 d. December 17, 1763 Elector of Saxony. Son of Elector Friedrich August II. (King August III. of Poland). He reigned Saxony from October to December 1763. He was married to Maria Antonia Walpurgia of Bavaria. They had 7 children. Two of their sons were Kings of Saxony.
