Bass, Robert Perkins b. September 1, 1873 d. July 29, 1960 New Hampshire Governor. Born in Chicago, he was Governor from 1911 to 1913. A graduate of Harvard College, he was a New Hampshire state representative from 1905 to 1909 and a state senator from 1909 to 1910. After his retirement, he worked on several commissions in New Hamphsire and died at Peterborough. MacDowell, Edward b. December 18, 1860 d. January 23, 1908 Composer and Pianist. He was the first American composer of classical music to win international recognition. MacDowell is chiefly remembered for his evocative piano miniatures, collected in the suites "Woodland Sketches" (1896), "Sea Pieces" (1898), "Fireside Tales" (1902), and "New England Idylls" (1902). A member of the Republican Party, he served as the state of New Hampshire's governor from 1969 until 1973. Steele, John Hardy b. January 4, 1789 d. July 4, 1865 New Hampshire Governor. Born In Salisbury, North Carolina, he was Governor of New Hampshire from 1844 to 1846. He was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1829. He was responsible for starting the first power loom in Peterborough, New Hampshire, becoming a prominent cloth manufacturer and mechanic. He started his own cotton mill, Union Manufacturing Company, and served as its superintendent from 1824 to 1845. He was a freemason and died in Peterborough.
