Alcorn, James Lusk b. November 4, 1816 d. December 19, 1894 US Senator, Mississippi Governor, Civil War Confederate Militia Brigadier General. Born near Golconda, Illinois, he moved to Mississippi in 1844 to practice law. He served in both the Mississippi Legislature and State Senate from 1846 to 1854, and founded the Mississippi levee system in 1858. During the Civil War he served as a Mississippi State Brigadier General in the Confederate Army.
