9th New Jersey Infantry Monument b. 1905 This monument, erected in 1905 by the regiment's survivors, commemorates the 9th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, which served from October 1861 to July 1865. Heaton, David b. March 10, 1823 d. June 25, 1870 US Congressman. A prominent Reconstruction-era politician, he represented North Carolina in the first session of Congress after that state was readmitted to the Union in 1868. Heaton was born in Hamilton, Ohio. Massachusetts Civil War Monument b. 1908 The Massachusetts Monument was erected in 1908 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in memory of her Soldiers and Sailors who died in North Carolina during the Civil War. The sculpture was completed in 1908 by Melzar Hunt Mossman of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The monument is a bronze female figure holding a pen in her right hand and shield with her left. She has written on the face of the shield,"AFTER LOYAL SERVICE, UNION AND PEACE". The bronze stands on a granite base with three bronze plaques. Nash, Abner b. August 8, 1740 d. December 2, 1786 North Carolina Governor, Continental Congress member. He was a member of North Carolina state legislature, in both the house of commons and state senate from 1777 to 1780, and again in 1782. He was then the Governor of North Carolina from 1780 to 1781. He was a member of the Continental Congress from North Carolina from 1782 until his death during a session in 1786. Rhode Island Civil War Monument b. 1908 The Rhode Island Monument was erected by the State of Rhode Island to commemorate the services of Rhode Island Volunteers who died in North Carolina during the Civil War. The sculpture was completed in 1908 by William Whitney Manatt, of the Gorham Manufacturing Company, Founders, Providence, Rhode Island. It was dedicated on October 6, 1909. The monument is a bronze female sculpture dressed in classical drapery on a pink granite base with the inscription. Simmons, Furnifold McLendel 'F.M.' b. January 20, 1854 d. April 30, 1940 US Congressman, US Senator. Spaight, the son of Constitution signer Richard Spaight, Sr., served as a member of the North Carolina state house of commons in 1819. He followed that as a state senator from 1820 to 1822. Spaight, Richard Dobbs b. March 25, 1758 d. September 6, 1802 US Congressman, Governor of North Carolina, Signer of US Constitution. After the death of his parents this native of New Bern, North Carolina was sent to live with relatives in Ireland at the age of eight.
