Manekshaw, Sam H.F.J. b. April 3, 1914 d. June 27, 2008 Indian Military Leader. He became the eighth chief of the Indian Army in 1969. In 1971 he led the country's forces in the war with Pakistan that ended with the creation of Bangladesh from East Pakistan. For his triumph, he received a Padma Vibhushan, India's highest civilian award and was the first Indian General to be conferred the rank of Field Marshal.
