Burchard, Horatio Chapin b. September 22, 1825 d. May 14, 1908 US Congressman. He graduated from New York's Hamilton College in 1850, moved to Illinois and became an attorney. From 1863 to 1866 he was a member of the Illinois House. He won an 1869 special election as a Republican to fill the US House of Representatives seat left vacant when Elihu B. Shaffer, J. (John Wilson) Wilson b. 1827 d. 1870 Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Utah Governor. Prior to the Civil War, he was active in Republican politics in Illinois, when commissioned an officer in the Union Army. For his war service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March, 1865. After the war, President Ulysses S. Turner, Thomas Johnston b. April 5, 1815 d. April 4, 1874 US Congressman. He was raised in Pennsylvania and Indiana before settling in Freeport, where he studied law and became an attorney in 1840. In 1842 he was appointed Stephenson County Probate Judge, and in 1844 he became Freeport's Postmaster. He became Stephenson County District Attorney in 1845, and also established the county's first newspaper, a weekly called the Prairie Democrat.
