Clarke, Sgt. James b. April 6, 1894 d. June 16, 1947 World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Winford, England, he served as a Sergeant Major in the 15th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, British Army. During the attack at Happegarbes, France, on November 2, 1918, Sergeant Major Clarke was in command of a forward platoon. Being held up by heavy German machine-gun fire, he rushed forward capturing in succession four machine-guns and single-handed bayoneted the crews.
