Biesu, Maria b. August 3, 1935 d. May 16, 2012 Opera Singer. A dramatic soprano, she was her country's premiere classical artist and had a noted career in principal venues on both sides of the Atlantic. Born and raised in the small village of Volintiri, she graduated from high school in 1951 and initially entered agricultural school. Ghetto Memorial [memorial] During the German-led invasion in 1941, the Jewish community of Kishinev, Moldova, was nearly annihilated. Many Moldavians fought in the ghettos with the Nazis murdering 53,000 out of the 65,000 inhabitants of the city. The monument, which is part of the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, is dedicated to the memory of those who died for freedom in World War II. Victims of the Pogrom of 1903 Memorial d. 1903 Erected in 1993, the monument is dedicated to the Victims of the Pogrom. In the first state-inspired actions of anti-semitism against Jewish people of the 20th century, 49 were murdered in the Kishinev Pogrom of 1903. The victim's were reburied on this site in the 1960s and the present memorial was placed over their graves on the 90th anniversary.
