Auchinleck, Sir. Claude b. June 21, 1884 d. March 23, 1981 British Army Field Marshal. During World War II he opened the 1941 North African campaign that led to the defeat of German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. After winning the first battle of El Alamein, he was relieved of his command for refusing to counterattack Rommel west of Cairo, Egypt. Chraïbi, Driss b. July 15, 1926 d. April 1, 2007 Author. Born in El Jadida, Morocco, Chraïbi is considered the father of the modern Moroccan novel. He moved to Paris in 1946, where he spent most of his life.
