Oliphant, Margaret Wilson b. April 4, 1828 d. June 25, 1897 Novelist, Historian and Essayist. Though her family moved to Liverpool in 1838, she continued to identify with her Scottish heritage. She began writing in 1844 and continued steadily until her death. Her first published novel, "Passages in the Life of Margaret Maitland", appeared in 1849 and gained her recognition. She was reputed to be Queen Victoria's favorite novelist. Married in 1852 to her cousin Frank Oliphant, she out-lived her husband, who passed away in 1859. Wotton, Sir. Henry b. March 30, 1568 d. December, 1639 British Diplomat, Poet. A former secretary to the Earl of Essex, he was knighted by King James I in 1604 and appointed Ambassador to Venice. His experiences in Italy inspired his famous quip, "An Ambassador is an honest man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country".
