Boulton, Matthew b. September 3, 1728 d. August 18, 1809 Manufacturer, Engineer. Improver with James Watt of the steam-engine. He was born in Birmingham where his father was a manufacturer of metal articles of various kinds. To this buisness he succedded on his father's death in 1759. He undertook the reproduction of oil paintings by a mechanical process, as well as the manfacture of artistic objects in metal. He established a strong reputation as a craftsman. Murdock, William b. August 21, 1754 d. November 15, 1839 Inventor. He was the first to make extensive use of coal gas for illumination and a pioneer in the development of steam-power. In 1777, he entered the engineering firm of Matthew Boulton and James Watt, whose experiment on the distillation of coal and wood first brought gas lighting to a pratical stage, illuminating their factory with it in 1803. Watt, James b. January 19, 1736 d. August 19, 1819 Inventor. He will be remembered as the inventor, improver of the steam-engine. This resulted from his improvements to Thomas Newcomen's steam-engine by inventing a separate condenser. He perfected a rotary engine and defined one horse power as the rate at which work is done when 33,0001bs are raised one foot in one minute.
