Ryan, John b. 1823 d. March 4, 1858 Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 1st Madras Fusiliers, Indian Army. At Lucknow, India, September 26, 1857, when a group of his comrades was besieged in a house in the city, Private Ryan with another Private went forward to assist. They fought off attackers and took a wounded Captain out of a dhooly and carried him into the house for protection.
