Derrick, Thomas Currie b. March 20, 1914 d. May 24, 1945 Australian World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Derrick was born at Medindie, an inner northern suburb of Adelaide, and attended Sturt Street Public School and Le Fevre Peninsula School before leaving school at age 14. He moved to the Berri area on the Murray River and worked at a vineyard from 1931 until he enlisted. Mackey, John Bernard b. May 16, 1922 d. May 12, 1945 World War II Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Corporal in the 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion, Australian Military Forces. In actions at Tarakan Island, Borneo, May 12, 1945, Corporal Mackey led his men along a very narrow spur where it was almost impossible to move to a flank.
