He graduated from Harvard University in 1890, received a masters degree from Harvard in 1891 and then continued his studies in Europe. Upon his return in 1893, he became an assistant professor of history at Harvard, where he remained until 1895, when he was appointed a professor of history at Cleveland's Adelbert College.
