de Merton, Walter b. 1205 d. October 27, 1277 Bishop of Rochester and founder of Merton College, Oxford. Ordained as a sub-deacon in 1235, he became a clerk in the royal chancery. In 1261 he was appointed Chancellor and continued in that office until 1263. He was made a Bishop of Rochester in 1274 and died as a result of an accident while fording the River Medway. Dickens, Charles [memorial] b. February 7, 1812 d. June 9, 1870 Victorian author whose works include several masterpieces including 'Oliver Twist', 'A Christmas Carol', 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'The Pickwick Papers'. He died at Gads Hill Place, his home five miles from Rochester. His wish was to be buried in front of Rochester Cathedral but was buried in Westminster Abbey instead.
